Restaurant Review: Ssambap Korean BBQ

Distance less traveled is always an added bonus for us “Will Travel For Food” people, especially when your travel requires that you go from Quogue to Midtown in order wet your pallet with a specialized cuisine. Yes, good barbecue is hard to find, especially when it’s from the East Asian Territory. “The Wife” and I usually travel to Bann Restaurant & Lounge located on 350 West 50th Street, however our last venture ended in me discovering an obscured piece of plastic in my food that was literally the last bite of my dish. So, in an effort to cut back on travel miles and leftover Barbie aesthetics, we have been searching for a Korean BBQ restaurant that won’t require a Heimlich Manuever and a lawsuit by my widowed spouse. Enter our replacement: Ssambap Korean BBQ, located at 2350 Nesconset Highway, Stony Brook N.Y. Ssambap is nestled in the corner of a strip mall, however, it’s external appearance does not reflect the internal decor. The restaurant is clean and decorated in an Asian motif; the service was good and very helpful when assessing a great choice of your personal liking. We had the Chicken Wings and Shrimp Dumplings as an appetizers. The wings were exceptional, the dumplings were ok. Our entrees were Chicken Chili Ssam (chicken in a spicy chili sauce) and Jap Chae (beef with potato noodles & vegetables). Both dishes were good but not exceptional, however I am intrigued enough to revisit and try something different. Overall, I recommend this place, as the ambiance, service, decor and food are good enough to satisfy your dining out appetite. If its BBQ you want and you don’t have your Gulfstream 4 fueled up and set to take flight towards the Far East, Ssambap is a good alternative. Happy eating.
